How to Prepare for Your First PMU Appointment
Permanent Makeup in Atlanta | Uniq
Your first permanent makeup appointment should feel planned, not rushed. A little preparation protects the result, shortens healing, and helps your artist work with clean, stable skin. This guide covers what to do before a cosmetic tattoo - whether you are booking lip blush, ombre powder brows, or a dark lip correction.
Permanent makeup (PMU) is a form of cosmetic tattooing. Pigment is placed in the upper layers of the skin with a machine. How well that pigment settles depends on your skin barrier, medications, sun exposure, and how closely you follow pre-care. Showing up unprepared is one of the most common reasons a first session needs a heavier touch-up.
Two weeks before
- Pause strong actives on the treatment area: retinoids, tretinoin, AHAs, BHAs, and aggressive peels.
- Skip sunbathing and tanning beds. Fresh pigment on sun-stressed skin heals less predictably.
- If you get cold sores and you are booking lips, talk to your doctor about antiviral prevention.
One week before
- Do not wax, thread, or tint the area that will be tattooed.
- Avoid starting new supplements that thin blood (fish oil, high-dose vitamin E, ginkgo) unless your physician says you must take them.
- Drink water and keep skin comfortable - not stripped, not slathered in heavy oils the night before.
- Send your artist clear photos of the area in natural light and list medications, previous tattoos, and scar tissue.
48 hours before
Do not drink alcohol. Avoid blood-thinning pain relievers such as ibuprofen or aspirin unless prescribed. Skip caffeine if you are sensitive to it; it can make you jittery on the table. Come with clean skin and no makeup on the treatment area.
If you are choosing a shape or color, save 3-5 reference photos that look like you - same skin tone, similar features - not filtered celebrity close-ups. A good artist will still map the face in person. References help; they do not replace mapping.
What happens at a first PMU appointment
Expect paperwork, photos, numbing, mapping, and a patch of work you approve before the full pass. A first cosmetic tattoo visit is part consultation, part procedure. Ask to see healed work on skin similar to yours, not only fresh photos. Fresh pigment always looks darker and sharper than the healed result.
Plan 2-3 hours for brows or lips. Eat a light meal. Wear a shirt you can pull away from the face. Bring your glasses if you want to check the mirror without leaning into the glass.
Who should reschedule
Pregnant or breastfeeding clients are typically asked to wait. Active cold sores, open acne on the area, sunburn, or an infection mean you should move the date. If you recently had injectables in the same area, follow the spacing your injector and PMU artist agree on - often several weeks.
